How to make Milan bonsai with roots the best (how to make bonsai with roots illustrated)

The Milantigen method can be roughly divided into two types:

The first type: planting in small pots

(1) When Milan is still a seedling, select seedlings with well-developed root systems. Then prune the roots, leaving some vertical or long roots, and trim some horizontal roots. At the same time, it is necessary to appropriately lower the height of the trunk or bend the aluminum wire.

(2) Use PVC pipes and select a height of about 30 to 45 cm. Generally, a diameter of more than 10 cm is more appropriate.

Fix the PVC pipe on the soil and test the depth, based on the fact that the roots can extend vertically without bending. The vertical root system allows the roots to penetrate deep into the soil faster.

(3) Hold the Milan plant with one hand and place it deep into the PVC tube. Use the other hand to fill the soil. Cover the soil without pressing it. Tap the pot wall to make the soil and the Milan plant's roots fit better. Then water the pot to help it settle down.

Under later management, Milan will steal a large number of roots out of the flowerpot, absorb nutrients and promote the growth of the root system.

After about 1 year of maintenance, do the same operation:

The main focus is on the roots that grow in the second year, and the developed and strong roots are selected. The taproots from the previous year are retained and the length is appropriately shortened.

Delete some of the horizontal roots and keep the vertical roots. The roots must grow to a certain thickness to support the weight of the magnolia branches and leaves.

Operation Key Points

When the vertical roots grow to a certain thickness, you can slowly lift the roots to the surface of the pot by repotting.

You can also slowly cut the PVC pipe to a higher height and wash away the soil layer by layer when watering until the roots are exposed. Generally, small seedlings need two to three operations to complete the root lifting step.

The second type: old Milan pile, potting method

(1) When the Milan is growing healthily, remove the root and soil ball from the pot, trim the soil ball around and remove about half of the horizontal roots, leaving the heart soil and the roots growing downward. Generally, do appropriate pruning on the branches to avoid insufficient water supply, which will lead to loss of branches.

(2) Find a flower pot that fits the size of the soil ball and make a hole in the bottom. Then find a larger flower pot. Fill the larger flower pot with soil. Then place the flower pot with a hole in the bottom on the larger pot, put the Milan in, and continue to fill the flower pot with soil. It is recommended to use river sand as the filling soil on the top. Use a mixed soil with more nutrients at the bottom.

(3) After about a year of growth, remove the flowerpot and replace it with a cardboard box. When watering in the later stage, the cardboard box will slowly rot and part of the soil ball on the top will be slowly carried away by the water flow, eventually exposing the root system.

Operation Key Points

When the roots are washed away by water, select the roots that need to be retained, and then slowly trim off some of the small fibrous roots exposed to the soil, leaving the main roots with enough nutrients to absorb and grow thicker. The bottom of the flower pot must be large, the soil must be fertile, well-drained and breathable.
