Can Oncidium be hydroponically cultivated?

Oncidium can be grown in water . Basically, all common Oncidium varieties can be grown in water, such as Oncidium , Cymbidium, Oncidium, Phalaenopsis, Jianlan, etc.

When growing Oncidium in water, it is best to keep it in an environment with relatively bright light. In fact, Oncidium is shade-tolerant and cannot be exposed to direct sunlight.

When hydroponically cultivating, you should also add some nutrient solution for Oncidium to the water, which will also have a very good effect. Generally, you should pay attention to the cleanliness of the water when raising Oncidium. If you add nutrient solution, change the water every 3 days .

Is hydroponics better or sphagnum moss better?

The cultivation of Oncidium generally uses mixed soil, the most common of which is a mixture of sawdust, granular orchid stone and peat soil. Secondly , pure sphagnum moss can be used for cultivation .

Because Oncidium is usually cultivated in greenhouses using sphagnum moss , and because they reproduce on a large scale, the environment is very suitable for it.

Hydroponic method of Oncidium

Take out the Oncidium, clean up the rotten roots and withered pseudobulbs, leaving only the green parts and the white healthy roots. After cleaning, remember to soak it in a solution of carbendazim for 20 minutes to sterilize it .

After sterilization, prepare a clean cup and hydroponically cultivate the Oncidium. Do not use too much water, as long as the roots are in contact with the water. Do not soak the upper belly (pseudobulb) in water, even if there are no roots. If there is only the pseudobulb and a little root disk, you can also stick it on the water surface and use the water vapor to grow roots .

In this way, after the pseudobulbs are hydroponically grown to normal and full, you can prepare for transplanting. You can replace them with sphagnum moss or pine scales and plant them. If you take good care of them, they will bloom this year or next year.

Precautions for hydroponic Oncidium

When Oncidium grows new roots, it means that the hydroponics is successful. At this time, the Oncidium has adapted to the hydroponic environment, and we can apply nutrient solution to the Oncidium.

When we apply nutrient solution to Oncidium, we need to use the method of applying thin fertilizers frequently. We must not apply too much fertilizer at one time, which may cause root burn in the Oncidium root system.

We can also apply fertilizer according to the growth period of Oncidium. For example, during the vigorous growth period, we can apply thin fertilizer. When the growth is slow in winter and summer, we need to stop fertilizing.
