What season is suitable for planting red cabbage moss?

Red cabbage moss is an annual or biennial plant of the genus Brassica in the family Cruciferae. It is mainly distributed in the Yangtze River Basin and is now cultivated in various parts of China.

According to historical records, red cabbage was a famous vegetable in the Tang Dynasty. It has always been a local specialty of Hubei that was presented to the emperor as tribute. It was once named " Golden Palace Jade Vegetable " and was as famous as Wuchang Fish.

Red cabbage is generally planted from August to October , and there are planting methods such as sowing and seedling raising. However, the sowing time can only be determined based on the characteristics of the variety and local climatic conditions.

Usually, early-maturing varieties in the Yangtze River Basin are sown and seedlinged in August and September; late-maturing varieties are sown and seedlinged in September and October; and the sowing period for mid-maturing varieties is between the two.

Planting technology of October red cabbage

Sowing and seedling raising

The nursery bed should be built in a place with convenient water source, good drainage and shade. The soil in the bed should be fertile, loose, and able to retain water and fertilizer.

Apply 1000 kg of decomposed high-quality farmyard manure per mu of seedbed , then turn the soil and harrow it to make a seedbed. The seeds should be sown sparsely and evenly, with a sowing amount of 100 grams per square meter of seedbed . The seedlings grown per square meter can be transplanted for 1 mu of land.

After the seedlings are all grown, thin out the seedlings 2-3 times, with the third seedling spacing being about 3 cm. Generally, pay attention to fertilization and watering, and prevent and control pests and diseases. When the seedlings grow poorly, you can apply quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer, and transplant the seedlings when they have 5 true leaves .

Colonization

Red cabbage should not be planted continuously with cruciferous vegetables. Before planting, deep plow the land and apply 1500-2000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure and 30 kg of superphosphate as base fertilizer per mu.

The row spacing for seedling transplanting is 60-65 cm, and the plant spacing is 25-30 cm. When transplanting, choose a sunny afternoon for better results. Water the roots while transplanting, and plant 1-2 plants in each nest.

Field management

Red cabbage has a long growth period and is harvested in succession, so both basal fertilizer and topdressing are required. After being planted and survived, sufficient fertilizer and water should be applied during the vigorous growth of leaves and the formation of cabbage, and 2,000 kg of decomposed manure should be topdressed per mu. In addition, fertilizer and water should be controlled in winter to avoid excessive growth and frost damage.

Pest and disease control

Viral diseases are prone to occur during high temperature and drought, and soft rot is easy to occur when the soil is too wet. In prevention and control, crop rotation is the main method to achieve water-drought or grain-vegetable rotation. Deep trenches and high ridges should be built in low-lying areas, and diseased and damaged branches should be completely removed and buried in the soil.

In addition, we should pay attention to timely sowing, cultivating strong seedlings, and using drugs for prevention and control. If diamondback moth, armyworm and aphid pests appear, we should prevent and control them in time. It is recommended to use biological control during the harvest period to reduce pesticide residues.
