The best way to store Chinese cabbage Tips for storing fresh Chinese cabbage at home

How to store Chinese cabbage

The lowest temperature that Chinese cabbage can tolerate is minus 11 degrees Celsius. At this time, the leaves of Chinese cabbage may freeze hard, but the rhizomes are still active. However, if the ambient temperature is lower than minus 11 degrees Celsius, the Chinese cabbage will be frostbitten, causing the whole plant to rot. Therefore, we must harvest and preserve it in time. So, what are the storage methods of Chinese cabbage?

Store at room temperature

We can first put the Chinese cabbage in the sun for a day to evaporate the moisture on the outside until the outermost leaves become soft. Then find a dark, cool and ventilated place.

When the room temperature reaches the above requirements, lay a thick layer of old clothes or dry wood on the ground. This can isolate the moisture and cool air from the ground and ensure air circulation.

Then lay the cabbages flat on the old clothes, stacking them up one layer with the head facing outwards and the other with the head facing inwards. But make sure there is enough space between the cabbages so that they can breathe smoothly.

In this case, if the temperature is below 0 degrees, just find a piece of rag to cover it to keep warm. At the same time, you should turn it over frequently and remove some rotten leaves in time. In this way, it will not go bad even if you leave it for 2 months.

White vinegar preservation method

First, you should remove the old leaves of the cabbage you bought without drying it in the sun, because the rot of cabbage starts from the roots. So you should cut off part of the cabbage roots and wipe off the water that has seeped out with a clean cloth.

Prepare a spray bottle, fill it with an appropriate amount of white vinegar, and add a little salt to mix evenly. Both white vinegar and salt have the effect of inhibiting bacterial growth. Then spray the solution evenly on the surface of the cabbage, especially the roots.

Then find an old newspaper or other absorbent paper to wrap the cabbage. Finally, put it in a plastic bag, try to expel the air inside, and put it in a cool place.

Paper box storage method

Buy the kind of cabbage that is not wrapped too tightly, remove the old leaves, and preferably dry it in the sun for a day. Then cut off part of the root and wipe the oozing water with a paper towel.

Then wipe the cut of the root with strong liquor, find a cardboard box, put the cabbage in it, half cover the opening of the cardboard box, place it in a ventilated place, and turn it over frequently.

How to store Chinese cabbage for a long time

1. Do not add yellow-leaf cabbage

Yellow-leaf cabbage has less fiber and more water, so it is best used for cooking. But it cannot be stored.

Yellow-leaf cabbage with high water content is easy to spoil, so when we store cabbage at home, we must choose green-leaf cabbage.

2. Place in a dry and ventilated place

When storing, be sure to store it in a dry and ventilated place. If the storage environment of the cabbage is too humid, the cabbage will easily turn black in less than three days. Everyone must remember this and don't forget it.

3. Place in an environment below 5 degrees

Friends who are familiar with the business know that supermarket employees usually put the extra vegetables they buy in the refrigerator. The temperature in the refrigerator is about below 5 degrees, which can shorten the time it takes for the vegetables to rot.

4. Cover the cabbage with a quilt

If the temperature outside is too low, remember to cover the cabbage with a quilt. This way the cabbage will not freeze easily. Frozen cabbage will have no moisture.
