How do single garlic seeds come from? How to plant and cultivate single garlic seeds

The seeds of single garlic are cultivated from garlic stalks. After the garlic stalks grow, they are not pulled out and become "natural garlic", which contains the seeds of single garlic.

How to cultivate single garlic seeds

Single-headed garlic seeds develop from garlic stalks. When the garlic stalks grow, they are not pulled out and grow into wild garlic, which contains the seeds of single-headed garlic. Other reasons for the growth of single-headed garlic include weak garlic cloves, low temperatures during sowing and growth, insufficient soil fertilization, high planting density, and insufficient nutrients.

In addition, single-headed garlic seeds develop from garlic stalks. Compared with ordinary garlic with cloves, single-headed garlic has a stronger garlic flavor and is crisper and spicier .

How and when to plant single garlic

1. Garlic seed selection

Choosing a good garlic seed is the key to planting single-headed garlic . Single-headed No. 1 garlic seed is preferred. Select small garlic cloves that are plump, free of pests and diseases, and weigh 0.8 to 1.5 g for sowing.

Over time, we have learned that if the garlic seeds are larger than 2 grams, there will be excess nutrition and the garlic will easily split into cloves, making it impossible to form single garlic. If the garlic seeds are less than 0.5 grams, the garlic produced will be too small and have no economic value, so the best amount is 0.8 to 1.5 g.

2. Planting time

When producing single-headed garlic, planting time is of paramount importance. Whether the planting is successful is directly related to the planting time. Through experiments, it is known that the probability of producing single-headed garlic is highest when sowing from mid-to-late December to mid-to-early January of the following year, which can reach about 90%, and the commercial quality is good.

If sowing is too early or too late, it is very easy to split the petals. For example, if sowing is done after March, the mortality rate of the plants will be over 50%. Therefore, when producing single-headed garlic, you must master the planting time.

3. Planting seeds

Because sowing is in the cold winter and the soil is frozen, so sowing will be difficult, so it can be combined with small arch shed planting. After the previous crop is harvested, you can use the period before sowing to plant one or two crops of leafy vegetables, and cover the small arch shed in time according to the temperature changes.

When planting single-headed garlic, remove the small arch shed, level the land, and dig furrows for planting. In addition, because the single-headed garlic has a small head, its yield is lower than that of ordinary garlic.

Therefore, in order to improve economic benefits, it is best to plant 100,000 plants per mu , that is, the row spacing is 10 cm when sowing , and the plant spacing is about 7.5 cm , to obtain higher economic benefits.

4. Field management

When the soil is fertile, 100 kg of high-quality compound fertilizer per mu is sufficient . If the soil is poor, more than 150 kg of high-quality compound fertilizer should be applied per mu .

During the growing period, you should pay attention to timely weeding, and water it more frequently than ordinary garlic. Generally, it needs to be watered once every 20 days .

In addition, we should also pay attention to the prevention and control of garlic maggots and chive maggots. In addition, the harvest time of single-headed garlic should be earlier than that of ordinary garlic . When the garlic leaves turn gray-green, the bottom leaves turn yellow, and the pseudostems become soft and fully expanded, they can be harvested .
