Do grapes need pruning? When and how to prune?

Pruning is very important for grapes. Pruning is necessary during their growth process, which can promote better growth of grape plants in the later stage and effectively increase the per-acre yield and fruit quality of grapes .

Grape pruning time

Grape vine pruning is mainly divided into two seasons: winter and summer . Winter pruning mainly focuses on branches that have been mature for one year and branches that can sprout and bear fruit in the spring of the following year. The pruning length is generally divided into long-tip pruning, middle-tip pruning, and short-tip pruning.

In the summer, cut off the older branches directly after harvesting, and then let the new branches bloom again. They will bear fruit again in winter. This is because the quality of flowers that sprout in the greenhouse in winter may not be good. Cutting off the branches after harvesting and using the good light in the summer to develop flower buds is better than developing flower buds in the middle of winter.

Grape pruning method

The grape pruning method should be adjusted according to the growth and growth stage of the plant. If the top of the grape vine is 1.2 cm thick, the pruning position should be 1.5 meters.

If the growth of the grape vine is poor, the pruning position can be shortened to 1.2 meters, and the weaker grape branches should be pruned heavily. Generally, heavy pruning can promote the growth of the plant better and better, and diseased and yellow branches should be pruned to avoid unnecessary consumption of plant nutrients and improve fruit yield and quality.
