How to keep roses in pots during the winter (how to keep them safe during the winter)

Roses are cold-resistant plants that can withstand temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius , but weak and small seedlings have poor cold tolerance. Some flower lovers keep them outdoors in the winter. For example, in North China, the temperature is around -15 degrees Celsius in winter, but they can still withstand it.

If you plant roses on the roof, they can generally survive the winter . But it must be in a south-facing, sunny, sheltered place with plenty of sunlight. But we need to note that when the temperature is below 4°C, the roses will stop growing . Therefore, cold-proof measures should be taken in the north, and the safest way is to move them indoors. So, can potted roses survive the winter safely through management and maintenance?

Keep the light sufficient

In late autumn or winter, when the temperature gradually drops, some leaves of roses turn yellow and fall off, which is normal. However, whether you place potted roses indoors or outdoors, you must pay attention to maintaining sufficient light.

Sunbathing in winter can keep you warm to a certain extent, and it can also allow the leaves of roses to photosynthesize normally. If the temperature in winter is relatively warm, with sufficient sunlight and nutrients, the roses planted in pots will occasionally produce flower buds. Because the temperature in winter is low, a flower can bloom for a long time.

Control watering

If you are planting roses in pots indoors, be sure to open windows frequently for ventilation. Whether you are planting roses outdoors or indoors, you must control watering in winter and keep the soil slightly dry. Because the temperature is low, roses are basically in a dormant or semi-dormant state, so there is no need to water them too much.

Winter pruning

Roses not only like fertilizer, but also need to be sprayed with pest control drugs occasionally. They also need to be pruned frequently. During the growth period, they need to be topped in time, and extra buds and some residual flowers need to be cut off. They also need proper pruning in winter. Remember this point. Pruning can be done when the temperature is below 5 degrees in winter.

Before bringing the seedlings indoors, for one-year-old seedlings, cut off 2/3 of the new branches if they are over 30 cm high, cut off 1/2 if they are less than 30 cm high, and do not cut if they are too small.

For seedlings over two years old, cut off 1/2 of the strong ones and 2/3 of the weak ones, leaving three or four strong main branches. The branches also need to be cut shorter to concentrate nutrients, which is more conducive to growing more branches and shoots in spring.

No need to fertilize in winter

Before the arrival of spring, you can prune the rose. And fertilize it when it is time. Chicken manure, sheep manure, and cake fertilizer can all be used at the bottom of the flower pot. Change the pot and soil when it is time to change it, so that it can have more nutrition. In the spring flowering period, it can bloom brilliantly and abundantly, and the flower buds on the branches are large and beautiful.
