How and when to plant blueberries

How and when to plant blueberries

Best time to plant blueberries

Before sowing blueberries, you must choose the right time. Usually, it is March to April in spring, or August to September in autumn. These two time periods are when the plants grow vigorously, and the survival rate of seeds planted at this time will be higher.

Blueberry planting methods and key points

1. Prepare the substrate: Before planting blueberries, you should choose a container with good air permeability and water holes, such as a clay pot. The substrate should also be clean and breathable. Generally, you can mix garden soil, peat soil and sulfuric acid powder.

2. Process the seeds: Purchase good quality and healthy blueberry seeds. Do not use dry or damaged seeds, otherwise the germination rate will be reduced. First soak the seeds in clean water for about a day.

3. Sowing: Use tools to dig a hole in the prepared soil, put the soaked seeds in, cover them with a layer of fine soil, then spray some water on the soil surface, and then place it in a ventilated place. It will germinate in a month.

Key points for daily management of blueberries

1. Topdressing fertilizer

Blueberry is a typical substance that is afraid of calcium. When there is too much calcium in the soil, it will affect the growth of the plant. Therefore, in the process of caring for blueberries, it is generally only necessary to apply decomposed fertilizer to the soil once before the plant bears fruit.

2. Disease and insect protection

A common disease of blueberries is the scorch virus. When the plant is infected with this virus, the leaves and flowers will die. Therefore, in the process of maintaining blueberries, they should be sprayed with sterilization agents every two months. At the same time, the leaves should be observed regularly. Once pests and diseases are found on the leaves, they need to be picked off immediately.
