Dragon fruit cutting time

Dragon fruit can be propagated by cuttings in spring and autumn, preferably in April and May. The climate at this time is conducive to growth, which increases the rooting speed and the survival rate of cuttings. Cuttings should be carried out in clear weather and not in rainy weather to avoid causing cut rot.

Dragon fruit cutting method

1. Prepare the planting bed: The planting bed for pitaya must be well prepared. It must be breathable and have good drainage. It can be prepared with peat soil mixed with river sand. After the soil is prepared, disinfect it and place it in the sun or water it with a sterilization solution.

2. Cut cuttings: Choose a mother dragon fruit plant with good growth, select stem nodes with full growth, cut into small sections of 15 cm in length, smear wood ash or sterilization powder on the cut for disinfection, and after drying in sunlight for 3 to 5 hours, insert and disinfect with potassium permanganate solution.

3. Carry out cuttings: prepare a flower pot, put the substrate into the pot, and insert the cuttings into the soil after the wounds are dried. It is a shallow-rooted plant and cannot be cut too deep, otherwise it will affect the growth of the root system. The depth should be 2-3 cm.

Maintenance of pitaya after cutting

After the pitaya is cut, it should be watered thoroughly to maintain the moisture of the substrate. It should be placed in a well-ventilated, dry, weak-light place. The moisture of the soil should be maintained at about 15%. It will generally take root in 15-30 days, and can be transplanted to the seedbed when the root length is about 4 cm.
