How to prune dragon fruit

Dragon fruit pruning time

Dragon fruit needs to be pruned many times during its growth period, and there is no specific time. For example, side branches and useless branches need to be pruned during the seedling stage to reduce nutrient consumption and promote normal fruiting. It also needs to be pruned after each fruiting, and the overgrown branches and branches after fruiting should be cut off. This is not only beautiful but also can make the nutrients more sufficient.

How to prune dragon fruit

1. Pruning of seedlings

Dragon fruit needs to be pruned from the seedling stage, mainly to remove excess branches, reduce the consumption of water and nutrients, and avoid the failure to form flower buds during the flowering period, and thus the failure to bear fruit. When pruning, the relatively strong and thick branches can be retained, and the rest can be cut off. The seedlings should be pruned about once every 10 days.

2. Pruning

When the pitaya seedlings grow to about 10 cm in height, you can top and pinch them. Use a sharp knife to cut flat at the top of the plant to ensure a smooth cut. The best place to pinch is 5 to 6 cm from the plant. It is not recommended to break it directly with your hands, as this will cause unnecessary damage to the plant.

3. Pruning of branches

This branch refers to the branch of the plant when it is flowering. The branches with better flowering and thicker branches should be kept, and the rest should be pruned. At this time, many people will worry that pruning will affect the number of fruits, but not pruning at this time will lead to a decline in the quality of all fruits.
