How to prune chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemum pruning time

The pruning time of chrysanthemum is divided into three stages. The first stage is spring pruning from May to June, when the chrysanthemums are pinched for the first time. The second stage is mid-August, when the chrysanthemums in the growing period are pinched for the second time and the thin branches and leaves are pruned to promote the development of branches and leaves that grow well.

The third stage is from September to October, the early autumn season. The chrysanthemum plants should be pruned, and all dead branches, old branches and bad branches and leaves should be cut off to reduce nutrient consumption and help the chrysanthemums survive the winter better.

Chrysanthemum pruning method

1. Timely pinching

During the growth period of chrysanthemums, pay attention to regular pinching to control plant height, which can also promote branch germination, and help the plant to be more vigorous and fuller. Pinching can be done several times. When the height of the chrysanthemum is found to be more than 10 cm, you can do the first pinching, and then pinch again as it grows.

2. Prune axillary buds

During the seedling stage of chrysanthemum, more axillary buds will grow on the plant, consuming a large amount of nutrients and affecting normal growth. The chrysanthemum can be properly pruned to remove excess axillary buds to avoid excessive nutrient loss.

3. Appropriate bud thinning

During the bud-forming stage, chrysanthemums may sprout many small buds. Too many buds are not conducive to flowering and will make the flowers smaller. Use tweezers to remove excess buds, and be sure to leave a spare bud when thinning out the buds.

4. Pruning after flowering

After the flowering period of chrysanthemums is over, the withered flowers should be pruned, and the withered flowers should be removed in time. The branches should also be shortened. When pruning the branches, it is necessary to pay attention to pruning from the roots. Through pruning, excessive nutrient consumption can be avoided, and the roots can be better stored with nutrients, which is conducive to better rooting and sprouting in the next year.
