How to prune watermelon seedlings and how to prune and cut branches to keep more watermelons

Watermelon seedling pruning time

When pruning watermelon seedlings, it is generally best to do it on a sunny day, as pruning at this time is conducive to the rapid healing of its wounds. Be careful not to do it on rainy days, otherwise if the wounds of the watermelon come into contact with water, it is easy to produce bacteria. The main purpose of pruning watermelon seedlings is to prevent the growth of ineffective stems and vines and consume nutrients.

How to prune watermelon seedlings

1. Pruning and vine pressing

If you want the watermelon seedlings to produce more fruits, you need to prune them. When the main vine of the watermelon seedling has 8-9 leaves, leave one main vine and two strong side vines, and then cut off the rest. Then wait until the watermelon vine is about 50 cm long, and press the vine every 3-4 nodes.

2. Pantou Pinching

When the fruits of the watermelon seedlings enter the swelling period, they need to be pruned and the tips pinched. Pull back the front vine and place it on one side of the watermelon, then cut off the vine tip. This can avoid the consumption of excess nutrients and is beneficial to the growth and development of the watermelon fruit.

3. Notes

When pruning watermelon seedlings, use sharp scissors so that the wound is small and smooth. Be sure to leave a 3-5 cm base at the pruned area so that the main branch will not be damaged when the wound heals. Also be sure to disinfect the scissors before use.
