How to propagate ginkgo and what to pay attention to

Ginkgo propagation method

The main ways of propagating ginkgo are cutting propagation, grafting propagation, division propagation, and sowing propagation. Its seeds can also be propagated, and its natural reproduction method is seed propagation. Generally speaking, cuttings of bamboo are the fastest.

Ginkgo breeding time

It is generally more suitable to propagate ginkgo in spring, because the plants grow more vigorously in spring and the climate is suitable. They can take root quickly after propagation and have a high survival rate.

Ginkgo division propagation

To propagate ginkgo by division, you must first clean the soil around the roots of the tree, then cut the suckers off the tree, and then plant them somewhere else for cultivation and management. This method can generally produce fruit earlier.

Ginkgo cutting propagation

Choose ginkgo branches with better growth and cut them into cuttings of about 20 cm in length. After cutting, rinse them with water and soak them in rooting powder. After drying, insert them into the soil. They will take root and sprout in about a month.

Ginkgo seed propagation

When propagating by seeds, first dig a trench or hole with a depth of 3-4 cm, then put the seeds in, cover them with soil and compact them. After about a year, the seedlings will grow to about 30 cm.

Ginkgo propagation precautions

1. Soil: Ginkgo is generally suitable for growing in soil with a relatively deep soil layer. This plant is not tolerant to saline and alkali, and does not like overly wet soil, so it is best to use acidic soil with good drainage.

2. Light: Ginkgo has a high demand for light. During the breeding process, it must be able to receive light throughout the day. If there is insufficient light, the plant will have yellow leaves and fallen leaves.

3. Watering: Ginkgo generally needs less watering in spring. In summer, it is relatively humid, so watering can be reduced. In case of drought, water should be replenished in time. In autumn and winter, the temperature drops, the plant needs less water, and the amount of watering should also be reduced.
