How to prune roses

Rose pruning time

Roses need to be pruned several times a year, mainly in spring and winter. Winter pruning should not be too heavy, otherwise it will be difficult to recover in spring. In spring, old branches can be cut off to promote the growth of new branches, so that the number of flowers will increase and the ornamental value can be improved.

How to prune roses

1. Winter pruning

Rose pruning in winter needs to be done before the temperature drops to 5 degrees. When pruning, the dense branches and long branches on the plant should be thinned out to reduce unnecessary nutrient consumption. At the same time, good ventilation and light transmittance between the branches and leaves of the roses should be ensured to prevent the plants from diseases and pests when they are maintained indoors.

2. Spring pruning

Rose pruning in spring needs to be done after the plant has resumed growth. Pruning at this time can allow the wounds to recover as quickly as possible and promote the sprouting of new branches. Note that when pruning, the weaker branches need to be cut off to prevent excessive nutrient consumption.

3. Pruning after flowering

Roses consume a lot of nutrients when they bloom, so after the flowering period ends, the remaining flowers should be removed in time, and the weaker branches should also be cut off. Dense branches, crossed branches, overlapping branches, etc. should also be cut off to increase internal ventilation and light transmission to help it recover quickly.

4. Pruning after disease

If roses are diseased, in order to reduce the spread of bacteria, all diseased branches and leaves need to be cut off. Do not throw them away after cutting, but pile them together and destroy them in a centralized manner. In order to avoid recurrence, you need to spray drugs for prevention and control.
