How to plant orchid seeds

Orchid seed planting time

Orchids are suitable for sowing in spring from March to April. The temperature, humidity and transpiration at this time are most suitable for plant growth, and they can grow vigorously after germination. Orchids like warmth very much. If the temperature is below zero degrees, it will directly affect the growth rate of the plant.

How to plant orchid seeds

1. Seed treatment

Orchid seeds are small, so it is best to choose uncracked, plump, and mature seeds. After disinfecting the seeds once in an alcohol solution, soak them in 10% sodium chlorate for 5 to 10 minutes. After cleaning, place them on a culture medium and keep the temperature at around 25 degrees, and they will germinate quickly.

2. Matrix preparation

Orchids are suitable for planting in clay pots. Add appropriate amounts of coal slag, coarse sand, charcoal, peat soil, and sandy loam to loosen the soil. After pouring water, spray an appropriate amount of potassium permanganate solution for thorough disinfection to kill the pathogens inside.

3. Planting management

Plant the sprouted orchid into the soil, cover it with a layer of about 3 cm of fine soil, keep the soil slightly moist, and transplant it when 4 to 5 true leaves grow. Shelter from rain during the rainy season and spray the leaves every night to keep them moist during the dry season.

Orchid daily management precautions

Orchids are positive flowers and prefer an environment with plenty of sunlight, but they need shade if the light intensity is strong. They are usually placed on a south-facing window and the flowerpot should be rotated every day to ensure uniform light exposure. They should be moved indoors when the temperature drops and covered with a layer of hay to keep them warm and moist.
