Hand-twisted gourd planting time

When planting hand-twisted gourds, it is more suitable to do so in spring. The temperature at this time is relatively stable, and the seeds can germinate well after planting. Under normal circumstances, it can be planted in March and April. The temperature during planting should be above 15 degrees, and it would be even better if the temperature can be guaranteed to be above 20 degrees.

How to plant hand-twisted gourd

1. Seed selection

When planting, you should choose mature, plump gourds with good shapes, and take out the plumper and mature seeds from the gourd. Of course, you can also buy seeds directly. Do not use small, shriveled seeds, as the germination rate of such seeds is very low.

2. Land preparation

Hand-twisted gourd is suitable for planting in soil with good drainage and air permeability. Do not plant it in compacted soil. Deep plowing is required before planting, at least 20 cm deep. Shallow plowing will affect its growth. Since it likes fertilizer, base fertilizer should be applied first.

3. Germination

Soak the hand-twisted gourd seeds in 40-degree warm water for 12-24 hours. Take them out and wrap them with gauze to dry. Put sterilized sand in the basin, then put gauze on it, put the seeds in and cover them with a towel to germinate. During the germination period, sprinkle water twice a day and keep the temperature between 25-28 degrees. When the seeds turn white, wait for sowing.

4. Planting seeds

When sowing hand-twisted gourds, sow the seeds into the soil with a sowing depth of about 1.5 cm, and then cover it with soil about 2-3 cm. After sowing, you can cover it with plastic film, which can not only increase the surface temperature but also keep moisture. When the seedlings emerge, you can remove the plastic film.

Precautions for planting hand-twisted gourd

1. During the growth period of hand-twisted gourd, the need for fertilizer needs to be increased, and topdressing is needed in time. Fermented sesame paste residue can be applied once a week. In order to make the flowers large and colorful, fertilizers mainly composed of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be applied before flowering. Potassium fertilizer should be applied once after flowering to improve the quality and quantity of the fruit.

2. When the vine of hand-twisted gourd grows to more than one meter, you can top it from the bottom three leaves to lower the height and improve the ornamental value of the plant. When the side branches grow four leaves but have no flower buds, they must be cut off in time, otherwise they will compete for nutrients and make other fruit branches unable to bear fruit.
