When is the best time to repot a banyan bonsai? Time and precautions for repotting

Banyan bonsai repotting time

It is generally not recommended to repot the banyan bonsai frequently. It is usually appropriate to repot the banyan tree once after 3 to 4 years of growth. The time for repotting is usually chosen in late spring, preferably between April and May. It is not suitable to repot the banyan bonsai in autumn to avoid damaging the root system of the plant.

Banyan bonsai repotting method

1. First, you need to repot the banyan tree. Take the banyan tree out of the pot with the soil, then remove one-third of the old soil in the lower part, then trim the old roots and overly long roots, and disinfect them.

2. Then you need to replace the potting soil. Since it is a bonsai for appreciation, you should pay attention to the ornamental value when choosing the flower pot. Plain rectangular or round flower pots are commonly used. The best material is a purple clay pot or a ceramic pot. The soil is required to be loose and fertile, with good permeability and water retention. You can add some decomposed organic fertilizer.

3. The last step is to pot the tree. First, make a drainage layer in the pot, then put soil in it, then put the banyan tree in the pot and fill it with soil. When repotting the banyan tree, you need to trim the branches and leaves to reduce nutrient consumption. After repotting, water it thoroughly and then place it in a sunny place for maintenance. Be careful not to expose the light to too strong a light.

Things to note when repotting banyan bonsai

1. After the banyan tree is repotted, since the root system has not yet been established, if you apply fertilizer blindly, it is very likely to cause root burn. Therefore, when repotting, you can use fermented chicken manure, bean cake, and bone meal mixed into the culture soil as base fertilizer, which can reduce the occurrence of fertilizer damage.

2. After repotting the banyan bonsai, you can water it thoroughly once. Then you need to wait until the soil is completely dry before watering it a second time. No water accumulation should occur, and the maintenance environment must have good ventilation to ensure air circulation so that the plant can resume growth faster.
