Can hydrangeas be propagated by cuttings?

Hydrangeas can be propagated by cuttings, which are generally chosen in spring and autumn. They can also be propagated in summer, but they should be done during the rainy season in June and July, and the temperature should be controlled at 13-18℃.

For cuttings, you should choose well-growing, pest-free, node-rich young branches at the top. The matrix should have good drainage and be loose and breathable.

Hydrangea cuttings steps

Selection of cuttings: High-quality cuttings have a high survival rate, take root quickly, and grow stronger after being potted. Cuttings should be selected from tender branches that have good growth, are free of pests and diseases, have nodes and are located at the top. Cut about 20 cm, keep the upper leaves, remove the lower leaves, and cut the lower part obliquely.

Substrate preparation: The cutting substrate needs to have good drainage performance, loose and breathable characteristics, which is conducive to the survival and rooting of cuttings. Vermiculite, river sand, coconut coir or perlite can be used as the substrate for hydrangea cuttings. Before cutting, it should be placed in the sun for 1-2 days for disinfection.

Carry out cuttings: Hydrangea cuttings are relatively simple. Use a small wooden stick to poke small holes in the substrate, insert the branches into the small holes, compact the surrounding soil to fix it, and water it thoroughly once to complete the cuttings.

Maintenance and management methods of hydrangea after cutting

After the cuttings are completed, move them to a well-ventilated place with scattered light for maintenance, control the temperature between 13-18℃, water them when the surface of the substrate is slightly dry, and stop watering when it seeps out from the bottom of the container. Keep the soil moist and wait for about 15 days for rooting.
