When is the right time to plant peony flowers? What is the right time and management?

Best time to plant peony flowers

Peony is best planted in autumn, usually in August-September. It should not be planted later than late September, otherwise it will not take root that year and the germination rate will be greatly reduced in the following spring.

How to plant peony flowers

1. Division

When planting, use a shovel to dig out the entire peony root, observe the condition of the peony root, and use the shovel to shovel along the natural texture of the peony root to ensure that there are at least 2-5 buds in each cluster. Then apply wood ash on the wound and place it in a cool and ventilated place to dry.

2. Planting

After the wound is completely dry, bury the fleshy roots after division in the soil according to the original planting depth, compact the soil, water once to establish roots after planting, and then no management is required. When it gets warmer next spring, the peony will sprout new buds and bloom in late spring and early summer!

Matters Needing Attention in Planting and Management of Peony Flowers

Peony is afraid of moisture and heat, and is best planted in acidic soil that is sheltered from the wind and faces the sun. It should not be planted continuously, and there should not be too many peony roots with buds, otherwise it will affect the growth of the roots.

In addition to division, peony can also be propagated by sowing. Usually, peony seeds mature in August. After the seeds mature, they will be collected and sown, or hidden in the sand after drying in the shade and sown in mid-to-late September. However, peony propagated by sowing is prone to reversion, and double petals will become single petals.
