How to care for kumquat trees in winter

Is the kumquat tree afraid of frost?

Kumquat trees may suffer frost damage when the temperature is below 10 degrees. They prefer a high temperature growing environment, and their optimal growth temperature is 22-29 degrees. It is very cold outside in the north in winter, so they need to spend the winter indoors, while in the south it is generally safe to spend the winter outdoors, but some areas will enter a dormant state.

The trunk of the kumquat tree can be wrapped with cotton cloth or straw in winter to keep it warm and prevent frost damage. The frozen dead branches and leaves should also be cut off to reduce the occurrence of diseases.

Kumquat tree winter maintenance method

1. Watering

After autumn, the amount of watering for the kumquat tree should be gradually reduced, but the soil in the pot needs to be replenished immediately when it is short of water. To prevent frost damage, you can water it once before the soil freezes, and then wrap the entire pot with grass to protect it from the cold.

2. Fertilization

In winter, if the kumquat tree enters a dormant period, do not fertilize the plant at this time, otherwise it is easy to cause fertilizer damage. You can fertilize it when the temperature warms up.

3. Sunbathing

Kumquat trees like light but are afraid of strong light, which can easily burn their leaves. In late autumn and early winter, they should be placed in a sunny place indoors so that they can fully receive light.

4. Pruning

By pruning kumquat trees in winter, the rational distribution of nutrients in the tree can be adjusted, so that limited nutrients are supplied to buds and leaves, forming more fruiting branches, thus achieving full branches of flowers and fruits.

5. Fertilization

Potted kumquat trees in the north can be fertilized and watered once a week, or topdressed with potassium dihydrogen phosphate, or watered with 200-250 times vinegar water in combination with fertilization every week, which is conducive to the plant's thick green leaves and vigorous growth.

Precautions for winter cultivation of kumquat trees

When caring for kumquat trees in winter, you should pay attention to ventilation. Otherwise, soot spots or powdery mildew may appear in the case of poor ventilation and poor light. In order to avoid this phenomenon, you should place it in a ventilated place to get proper light.

In winter and spring, some chicken manure, bean cake, compost, etc. can be buried as basal fertilizer for kumquat trees, but excessive nutrient intake should be avoided. After the plants bear fruit, prune them once to cut off weak branches and branches overgrown with weeds.
