Introduction to Pitaya Planting

Pitaya is a tropical and subtropical fruit. It likes light and tolerates shade, heat and drought, and likes fertilizer and tolerates barrenness. Pitaya can be planted all year round. The best time to plant it is spring and autumn, preferably in spring from March to April. Its lifespan can reach 20 years.

It is grown in Hainan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian, Yunnan and other provinces in mainland China. The common varieties are red-fleshed pitaya and white-fleshed pitaya.

Dragon fruit planting results after several years

White-fleshed pitaya will begin to bloom and bear fruit 12 to 14 months after planting, red-fleshed pitaya will begin to bloom and bear fruit 16 months after cultivation, and will bloom and bear fruit about a year after grafting.

If it is a potted plant grown from pitaya seeds, it will take 4-5 years of careful care before it can bloom and bear fruit. Very few will bloom in the third year, but will not bear fruit. The fruiting period of pitaya potted plants grown from cuttings is short, and with proper care it will bear fruit the next year.

Why doesn't dragon fruit bear fruit?

If pitaya is planted too densely, some plants will not receive enough light, resulting in reduced yield.

During the seedling stage, you need to control the water and fertilizer slightly, otherwise the seedlings will not grow strong enough, will grow too tall, and will affect the results.

Key points for growing pitaya

1. Choose a plot with good drainage, loose soil and high fertility to plant pitaya. Fertilizer and watering are needed many times during the growth period, especially in the flowering and fruiting period. Since the expansion of the fruit requires a lot of nutrients and water, fertilizer should be applied every week or so at this time. If the surface is found to be dry, water it again.

2. Dragon fruit grows better in a warm, sunny environment. It needs to be watered promptly in spring and summer to allow the roots to grow vigorously. In rainy weather, drainage measures need to be taken to avoid infection from bacteria that may cause root rot.
