How to sow Sassafras seeds

Sassafras seeds sowing time

The sowing season of Sassafras is divided into winter and spring. The seedlings are planted in order in spring. Sassafras begin to bloom and bear fruit at the age of 8, and enter the peak fruiting period at the age of 12. The flowering period is from late February to mid-March in spring.

Sassafras seeds are sown in summer

Sassafras is highly adaptable to the environment and can be planted in the summer. However, the temperature is high in summer and the seeds are prone to drought and waterlogging, so countermeasures need to be taken.

How to sow Sassafras seeds

Sassafras seeds have the characteristics of long dormancy period and uneven germination. Before soaking the seeds, screen out the stored seeds, soak them in cold water for 24 hours, then soak the seeds in potassium permanganate solution for half an hour for disinfection, and then rinse them with clean water.

Then pour into warm water mixed with boiling water and cold water, soak the seeds for half an hour, and then use straw to keep warm and germinate. The temperature should be between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. Stir and mix regularly, and add hot water at about 40 degrees Celsius once. The seeds will start to sprout in 4 to 5 days.

Seed treatment

Before sowing, the seeds of Sassafras can be soaked in layers to accelerate germination. The germination rate is high. Take out the stored seeds, wash and soak them for 1-2 days, wash them again after disinfection, and soak them in 50-degree warm water for 30-60 minutes.

Place the blanched straw on a bamboo mat, sprinkle the seeds soaked in warm water, place the bamboo mat indoors to accelerate germination, keep it at room temperature, pour warm water regularly, and check the germination.

Seed germination

After sowing the seeds of Sassafras, they will begin to germinate after about 20 days under suitable temperature conditions (air temperature 18-19℃, surface temperature 19-20℃).

Seed germination

It takes 20 to 30 days from sowing to the growth of seedlings. During this period, you should frequently check the emergence of seedlings and remove the weeds in time. You should pay attention to clearing ditches and draining water, weeding and loosening the soil after rain. During the growing period, weed 7 to 8 times and loosen the soil 3 to 4 times. Apply nitrogen fertilizer in the mid-term and potassium fertilizer mainly in autumn. From late May to early June, thin out the seedlings when they are 10 to 20 cm tall.
