How long is the growing cycle of onions?

Introduction to Onion Growth

Onions are native to western Asia and are grown all over the world. In China, they are mainly distributed in Jinxiang, Yutai, Shanxian, Pingdu in Shandong, Fengxian in Jiangsu, Jiuquan and Wuwei in Gansu, Yuanmou and Dongchuan in Yunnan, and Xichang in Sichuan.

Onion growth cycle

Onion is a long-day crop that prefers a warm, humid and sunny environment. It requires more than 14 hours of sunshine during the bulb expansion period and the bolting and flowering period. It is not drought-tolerant and is suitable for planting in moist, fertile and well-drained soil.

The onion growth cycle is about one year. If planted in autumn, it can be harvested in the autumn of the following year.

Onion growth rate

Onions grow slowly, so choose good quality varieties and plant their seeds in a suitable seedbed. After about a month, the seedlings can be transplanted. When transplanting, the row spacing should be controlled between 25 and 30 centimeters, increase light and ventilation, and manage water and fertilizer well during the growth period, and the harvest can be harvested soon.

Onion growth cycle management

The onion yield will be affected by planting techniques and varieties, but it is generally around 6,000 kilograms, and if it is better, it can be 10,000 kilograms.

Temperature management: Onions like warmth. Seeds and bulbs can germinate at 3-5 degrees. The suitable temperature for leaf growth is 18-20 degrees. Strong seedlings can tolerate low temperatures of 6 to 7 degrees. Bulbs need slightly higher temperatures to expand, preferably between 21 and 27 degrees. However, if the temperature is too high, it will go into dormancy.

Fertilization management: 10 days before sowing, till the land first, then apply fully decomposed farmyard manure, then till the land twice to fully mix the fertilizer with the soil, and apply top dressing in time when the growth is vigorous.
