Boxwood cutting propagation methods and precautions

Boxwood propagation method

Boxwood is mainly planted in areas between 1200 and 2600 meters above sea level and is commonly found in valleys, stream banks, and under forests. It is widely planted in China and some of it is under cultivation.

Boxwood can be propagated by cuttings and high-branch layering. The cutting method is simple to operate, very easy to survive, and grows fast. If it is cared for at home, it is generally more convenient to use the high-branch layering method for propagation, and the germination rate is also relatively high.

Boxwood cutting propagation method

Boxwood is suitable for cuttings in late spring and early summer. At this time, it can be combined with pruning. The temperature and humidity are suitable for root germination, and the survival rate of cuttings is very high. The specific cutting method of boxwood is as follows:

1. Before boxwood cuttings, you need to choose suitable branches. You can choose one-year-old semi-lignified middle branches as cuttings. The length of the cuttings should be based on retaining 3 buds. The lower leaves can be trimmed off, and the two upper leaves can be tied with a thin plastic rope to reduce transpiration. The incision can be smeared with glue or wood ash to prevent excessive flow of latex and affect survival.

2. Prepare a loose, fertile substrate. You can use plain sand or frog stone. After disinfection, insert the branches into the soil. You can water it thoroughly once to maintain a high humidity, but no water accumulation should occur.

3. The ambient temperature after boxwood cuttings should be between 18 and 25 degrees, and shade and ventilation should be provided. It will take root in about 15-20 days. Place it in a slightly shaded place after potting, and gradually increase the light when new buds grow.

Precautions for boxwood cuttings

Boxwood likes a warm environment. The suitable growth temperature is between 20 and 25 degrees. It has a certain resistance to high temperatures and can grow well in an environment of 30 degrees. However, it has poor cold resistance. The ambient temperature in winter needs to be above 8 degrees. When the temperature is low, a large amount of leaves will fall.
