Rose cutting propagation methods and precautions

Rose cutting propagation methods and precautions

How to propagate roses

The more commonly used methods of rose propagation are seeds, grafting, high pressure, division and cuttings. Generally speaking, cuttings are more convenient, while seed propagation is less commonly used and has a longer growth cycle.

Rose cutting propagation method

It is generally more appropriate to propagate roses by cuttings in spring and autumn. If you propagate roses by cuttings in spring, choose to do it in early spring. If you propagate roses by cuttings in autumn, usually do it in late autumn or early winter, and the success rate is higher than in spring. The specific propagation methods of roses by cuttings are as follows:

1. Prepare the soil

It is best to use soil with deep soil layer, good drainage and rich in organic matter for rose cutting bed. Some coarse sand can be added to facilitate drainage. Generally, rotted soil, rotten leaf soil, perlite and fine sand are used, and then disinfected with a small amount of potassium permanganate and methyl thiophanate mixed solution.

2. Select cuttings

When making rose cuttings, you should choose mature rose branches, or choose tender stems and fully mature hard branches, cut off the excess branches remaining on them, keep the incision oblique, and place them in a nutrient solution containing rooting powder and let them stand for 3 days.

3. Take cuttings

Then place the soaked branches in a ventilated environment for 2 to 3 days. After the cut is dry, insert it into the soil at a depth of one-third of the branch. Then compact it and water it thoroughly, but not too much, so that the cuttings can be closely combined with the soil to promote plant growth.

Rose cuttings precautions

1. When propagating roses by cuttings, you should pay attention to the fact that roses have very high requirements for the soil. Generally, use loose soil, humus soil that is conducive to later drainage, or nutrient-rich alkaline soil. Burying an appropriate amount of diluted nitrogen fertilizer in the soil will be more conducive to the rapid growth of the plant.

2. After the roses are cut, pay attention to soil moisture. Roses prefer a cool growing environment. It is best to place the plants in a cool place and choose nitrogen and potassium fertilizers in the early stages of plant development. Once a week, when the root system is fully grown, you can consider transplanting to a large pot.
