Introduction to the growth of water spinach

Water spinach likes to grow in a hot and humid climate. It is not demanding on soil conditions and grows in places with fertile and moist soil. Water spinach is native to East Asia. Currently, its main producing areas in China are Fujian, Guangxi, Guizhou, Sichuan and other provinces in central and southern China, and it is relatively rare in the north.

Water spinach growth cycle

Water spinach likes sufficient sunlight, is not strict about soil conditions, requires a large amount of fertilizer, has strong fertilizer tolerance, and has a relatively large demand for nitrogen fertilizer. The growth cycle of water spinach is generally between 35-45 days, so it can be harvested multiple times a year.

Water spinach growth rate

There are two ways to cultivate water spinach: dry cultivation and water planting. Dry cultivation is the main method in the north, while dry cultivation and water planting coexist in the south. The suitable sowing period is generally in mid-to-late April every spring. Water it immediately after sowing, and the seedlings will emerge in about 7 days. It grows relatively fast and can be harvested when the seedlings are 20-30 cm tall.

Management of water spinach growth cycle

Generally speaking, water spinach can be harvested every 20 days or so. From seedlings planted in holes, about 1,100 kilograms can be harvested per mu each time, and from row sowing, about 1,350 kilograms can be harvested. In the whole year, 7,500 to 8,000 kilograms can be harvested per mu, with considerable economic benefits.

Temperature Management

The suitable temperature for the growth of water spinach is 25-30℃, so the temperature must be controlled during its growth cycle. It can withstand high temperatures of 35-40℃, and its growth will stagnate below 10℃, so warming measures must be taken in winter to avoid frostbite.

Fertilization management

Since water spinach is a vegetable that can be harvested many times, fertilization should be carried out in batches. The best fertilizer is young farm manure, which can be directly diluted with manure water and then used to water the roots of water spinach.
