How to save seeds of lotus

Choose plump, disease-free and insect-free water lily seeds and continue sowing them next year. The seeds have a shelf life of 12 months. If you pick them this year and sow them next year, the germination rate will be very low and the yield will be even lower.

You can save seeds for the water lily by hiding them in a ventilated place. The seeds of the water lily come from the lotus pod that appears inside the flower after it withers. Pick the lotus pod and take out the lotus seeds one by one.

Water Lily Seed Preservation

As long as the opened water lilies do not touch water and are kept dry and free from pests, they can be preserved for a long time. Water lilies seeds can be preserved for a long time and can generally be planted after 5 years.

Planting lotus seeds

Bowl lotus has no dormant period. As long as the water temperature can be maintained above 16 degrees, it can be sown all year round. However, for areas without insulation measures, it is best to sow in spring. Generally speaking, the higher the temperature, the shorter the germination time. Under suitable temperature and sunlight, bowl lotus takes about 55 days from sowing to flowering in spring and about 70 days in autumn.

The seed coat of the water lily is very thick. If you want to increase the germination rate, you need to perform simple processing. File a small hole on the round end of the water lily to allow water to penetrate through the gap, allowing the seeds to absorb water and swell. Then soak them in warm water and place them in a warm place. They will germinate in about 3 days and can be transplanted after 10 days.
