Papaya is a plant of the genus Chaenomeles in the Rosaceae family. The plant height is generally 5-10 meters. The twigs are purple-red and the leaves are mostly oval. The flowers are solitary in the leaf axils. The pedicels are short and the petals are light pink. The fruit surface is dark yellow with a faint fragrance.

The alias of papaya is hawthorn, wood plum, crabapple, and smooth-skinned papaya. There are many types of papaya, and there are four common ones, mainly hairy papaya, wrinkled papaya, smooth-skinned papaya and papaya. The common papaya on the market refers to the last type.

Papaya Planting Conditions

Papaya prefers a semi-dry and semi-humid environment and cannot tolerate waterlogging. The soil should not be too dry or moist. It is not shade-tolerant and prefers a warm and sunny environment. Sufficient light needs to be provided during the growth period to improve the quality of the fruit.

Papaya Planting Climate and Temperature

The suitable temperature for papaya growth is 26-32℃, and the average monthly minimum temperature is above 16℃. It can grow normally, bloom and bear fruit, and ensure a certain fruit yield. This climate belongs to the tropical climate.

Suitable areas for growing papaya

Generally, papaya is planted in sandy soil with good light, sufficient soil fertility and loose soil. When selecting seeds, it is necessary to choose the best one according to the conditions of the planting site. At present, it is planted in Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Guangxi and other provinces (regions) in China.

Papaya planting time

Papaya can be sown in January and February in spring and winter. The survival rate of sowing in this period is the highest, and it can promote the seeds to take root and germinate quickly.

Benefits of Papaya Planting

Generally, the yield of papaya per mu is 2,500 to 5,000 kilograms. With proper management, the yield can reach more than 5,000 kilograms. A conservative estimate is 3,000 kilograms. The current market price of papaya is 5-10 yuan. Calculated at 5 yuan, the income per mu is about 30,000 yuan. Excluding the planting cost, the net profit is about 20,000 yuan, which means an average of 5,000 yuan per mu.
