How to trim the ball orchid to look good

When to prune the ball orchid

Hoya is best pruned in sunny weather, after 4:00 p.m.

The pruned branches can be used for cuttings. The best time for cuttings is March-April. Choose healthy branches and place them in water. You can add rooting water to the water and soak them. Then plant them in the soil. If the weather is good, they will generally germinate in 3-4 days. If the weather is bad, it will take longer.

Pruning the branches of the ball orchid

The ball orchid can be topped in the early growth stage to break the apical dominance and promote the germination of the lower axillary buds. During the growth period, the old, sick, weak, overgrown, and unsightly branches need to be pruned to reduce nutrient consumption and promote the overall beauty of the plant.

Generally, the seedlings of Hoya can be topped and pinched to control the growth rate. The terminal buds and side branches can be cut off before flowering. After the flowers fade, the remaining flowers and non-flowering buds can be cut off. In summer, the dense branches and leaves should be thinned out, and the root system should be cleaned and pruned to enable better growth. At the same time, dead branches, poor branches, and unnecessary branches that hinder the plant shape should be pruned. In winter, the dead and broken branches should be cut off.

Tips for pruning ball orchid

Hoya prefers half shade and half sun. When caring for it on a daily basis, it needs to provide appropriate shade. The old and rotten branches can be trimmed clean, but the overly long branches can be trimmed appropriately. Do not trim them drastically to avoid affecting the normal growth of the plant.
