Elderberry Varieties


There are 20 varieties of elderberry, all of which are produced in the subtropical zone and most of the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. China has introduced relatively few varieties, only about five. The main varieties of elderberry are Canadian elderberry, Luying elderberry, and Western elderberry. In recent years, some elderberries have been introduced from abroad, including the "Golden Leaf" elderberry, the "Golden Feather" elderberry, the "Purple Cloud" elderberry, and the "Mosaic Leaf" elderberry.

Canadian Elderberry


This variety grows in eastern North America and is the parent of the "Golden Leaf" elderberry, named after its golden leaves.

Lu Ying


This variety is also called comfrey. It grows in the Yangtze River Basin and the eastern part of the northwest region. It likes humidity and is commonly seen growing in humid areas.

Sambucus nigra


This variety is native to southern Europe along the Mediterranean coast, North Africa and even West Asia. This variety is the parent of the 'Purple Cloud' elderberry and the 'Mosaic Leaf' elderberry. The leaves of the 'Purple Cloud' elderberry are smooth on both sides. The newly grown leaves are yellow-green in color, turning dark purple later on, and the berries are purple-black. The leaves of the 'Variegated' elderberry have silvery-white edges and silvery-white patterns inside, like blooming flowers. The berries are black-purple.
