Time and method of cutting red maple

Red maple cutting time

It is best to propagate red maple cuttings in spring or summer, but the branches used for cuttings in different seasons are also different. The branches used for spring cuttings are annual branches, while the branches used for summer cuttings are branches grown in the current year. The survival rate of spring cuttings is higher. The temperature in summer is too high, and improper management will easily cause the death of the plant.

Red maple cutting method

1. Branch selection

Select some high-quality branches from high-quality red maple mother trees. The branches should be strong, not attacked by diseases and pests, and about 10 cm in length. Leave two or three leaves on the top of the branches. Cut the bottom of the branches into oblique cuts with scissors, and then soak them in rooting liquid. Take out the branches and start cuttings.

2. Prepare the substrate

The red maple cutting medium must be prepared in advance. If you prepare it yourself, the medium is composed of river sand and yellow soil, which are mixed in a certain proportion. Such soil is loose, breathable, and has good drainage, which is more conducive to the rooting of branches.

3. Take cuttings

When red maple cuttings are taken, attention should be paid to the density and depth between the branches. A certain distance should be maintained between the branches. The branches should be inserted into the substrate to half depth. Then, the surrounding soil should be used to compact the branches and water them thoroughly. The cuttings are completed.

Maintenance of red maple cuttings

After the red maple cuttings are taken care of, they need to be placed in a ventilated, shaded and warm environment. After the substrate is dry, water it in time to keep the soil slightly moist. With careful maintenance, it will take root in about 25-30 days.
