How and when to plant cabbage

Cabbage planting time

Spring cabbage can be raised in autumn and winter, transplanted in winter, and harvested in the spring of the following year. Autumn cabbage can be raised in summer, transplanted in summer and autumn, and harvested in autumn and winter. Winter cabbage can be raised in summer and autumn, transplanted in autumn and winter, and harvested in winter and the following spring.

According to different cultivation seasons, choose high-quality, high-yield, strong stress resistance, strong disease resistance, good commercial quality, resistance to cracking, and resistance to storage and transportation, such as Fengyuan, Xiyuan No. 8, and Green Circle. Choose varieties with strong cold resistance in winter, choose varieties that are not easy to bolt in spring, and choose early-maturing and high-temperature-resistant varieties in autumn.

Planting Cabbage in Spring

The best time for spring planting is mid-March. In spring, you should choose varieties that are not easy to bolt. Choose loose, water-retaining, fertilizer-retaining, and well-drained soil for planting, and spread the nutrient soil evenly on the sowing bed.

Growing Cabbage in Summer

It is best to plant in late June in summer. The temperature is high in summer, so a frame needs to be built and covered during the high temperature season. Watering is required every day to keep the soil moist and ensure the water requirement of the seeds.

Planting Cabbage in the Fall

Planting is in autumn from July to August. Water the soil sufficiently before planting. Mix the germinated seeds and fine sand evenly, then spread them evenly in the seedbed, cover them with fine sand, and then cover them with a shade net.

Growing Cabbage in Winter

In winter, small arch sheds are used starting from mid-December. The planting time should not be too early as the seedlings are prone to sprouting when they are old. Before planting, the seeds should be soaked in a temperature of 20-25 degrees to keep them moist and germinate. At the same time, the seeds should be cleaned and can be sown when about 20% of the seeds begin to germinate.

How to grow cabbage

1. Seed treatment: Before planting cabbage, you need to select high-quality, full seeds. To prevent the seeds from carrying pathogens, you can soak them in a carbendazim solution for 24 hours in advance.

2. Disinfection of the seedbed: Not only the seeds need to be disinfected, but the planting soil also needs to be disinfected in advance. You can use formalin mixed with water to water the nutrient soil, and then cover it with film for 5 days. You can also use carbendazim wettable powder mixed with the nutrient soil for disinfection.

3. Seedbed management: Cabbage seedlings will emerge 5 days after sowing. If the temperature is high at this time, ventilation is required to prevent seedling burn. If the temperature is low, cover the film to prevent the seedlings from freezing. Water once a week. When the seedling stem is more than 0.5 cm thick, the temperature needs to be above 15 degrees to avoid passing the vernalization stage. It can be transplanted when it grows 5-6 true leaves.

4. Maintenance and management: During the growth period of cabbage, the soil needs to be kept moist and fertilized in an appropriate amount to meet the growth needs of the plant. Watering should be properly controlled in the late stage, inter-cultivation and weeding should be carried out in time, and drainage should be carried out in time during the rainy season.
