Geranium cutting propagation methods and precautions

Geranium propagation method

Geranium is widely grown in the world. Young plants are fleshy herbs, while old plants are semi-lignified. It is mainly propagated by sowing and cuttings.

Seed propagation is generally carried out in spring and autumn. The suitable temperature for germination is 20-25℃. Geranium seeds are not large, so the planting depth should not be too deep. If carefully cared for, they will germinate in about 2-5 days. If sown in autumn, they will bloom in the summer of the following year.

Geranium cutting propagation method

Geraniums enter a dormant period from June to July every year. Except for these two months, cuttings can be taken at other times, but it is best to do it in spring and autumn. Cuttings are prone to turn black and rot in summer, and the temperature is very low in winter and will not take root.

If geranium is cut in January, it will bloom in June. If it is cut in October, it will bloom in February or March of the following year. The specific cutting method of geranium is as follows:

1. Choose sturdy geranium branches growing at the top, about 10 cm in length, place them in a well-ventilated environment, let the cut dry, and then insert them into the sand bed after a film is formed. You can also insert them into a mixed matrix of perlite and peat. Keep them in a semi-shaded place, maintain the temperature at 13 to 18 degrees, and they will generally take root in 14-21 days.

2. The branches of geranium can be soaked in 0.01% indoleacetic acid solution to improve the survival rate and rooting rate of cuttings. Transplantation can be carried out when the root length is 3-4 cm.

Geranium cuttings precautions

Geraniums like warmth and are afraid of cold, so you need to take measures to keep warm in winter. It is best to move them indoors for maintenance. You can place them on a sunny windowsill so that they can receive sufficient light. When the light intensity is high in summer, you need to provide shade.
