How to prune cherries

When to prune cherries

Cherries can generally be pruned three times, namely spring pruning, summer pruning and winter pruning, and the pruned branches can be used for cuttings. You need to choose one-year-old healthy woody branches, cut them into about 18 cm, soak the cuttings in rooting water, take out the cuttings for cuttings, and generally insert 2/3 of the cuttings into the soil.

How to prune cherry branches

In spring, the main work of pruning cherry branches and buds is to remove some of the top buds, thin out the branches, remove densely growing branches, and cut off crossed and overlapping branches. This can reduce nutrient consumption and increase light transmittance.

The main purpose of pruning cherry trees in summer is to reduce the ineffective growth of new shoots. Generally, methods such as removing buds, twisting branches, thinning branches, pulling branches, pinching, and ultra-short pruning can be used to make the trees take shape earlier, bloom earlier, and bear fruit earlier.

Winter pruning of cherries refers to pruning performed after the plants enter winter dormancy. The main pruning methods include shortening, slow release, pinching back, and thinning branches.

Cherry pruning grows fast

If you want cherries to grow faster, you can pinch them. Pinching can promote the transformation of vegetative growth to reproductive growth, promote the formation of flower buds, and achieve the purpose of early flowering and early fruiting.

Cherry blossom pruning

If cherries want to bloom, the tree structure should be adjusted in the early fruiting stage, and the weak lateral branches should be pruned back or shortened to strengthen them, which can effectively promote the flowering of the plants.

Cherry pruning results in more

If cherries are to bear more fruits, it is important to do a good job of pruning. If the pruning is not done properly, the branches and leaves will grow too long and the cherry yield will be low. When pruning, you should mainly thin out the dense branches and competing branches, and do less scissoring.

Cherry pruning precautions

Cherries love light and have strong polarity. If too many outer branches are cut short during shaping and pruning, it will result in too many outer branches, densely packed branches, strong on top and weak on the bottom, and the inner branches and fruiting branches will easily become weak and die.
