The main vine can be pinched when it grows to about 30 cm, and the side vines need to be pinched again after they grow to 150 cm.

After planting, it takes about 160-180 days for chayote to bloom and bear fruit. It can be harvested 15-20 days after flowering, and the fruit will mature after 40 days. Under normal circumstances, each chayote plant can grow 200-300 fruits. People must handle it with care when harvesting to avoid bruising the surface of the fruit.

Chayote Planting Tips

When planting chayote, you must choose the right variety, and select melons that are plump, of good quality, with smooth and thin skin, a lot of wax, slightly yellowish, with inconspicuous hairs, slightly protruding buds, no scars or damage, and fully mature as seed melons. In the north, seedlings are raised in greenhouses in mid-March, transplanted in late April, and harvested when mature in August.

Before planting chayote, you need to apply enough base fertilizer, cover it with mulch after planting, water it to promote the growth of the seedlings, and maintain it in a semi-shaded environment. You also need to insert wooden poles or small bamboo poles next to the seedlings for the vines to climb. After transplanting, the side vines grow stronger than the main vines.
