How to trim the keel (trimming time and method)

When to trim the keel

Dragon bone pruning is usually carried out in spring and autumn along with repotting. The cut branches can be covered with carbendazim powder, then placed in well-ventilated scattered light to dry for a few days, and then planted in relatively moist soil.

How to prune branches and leaves

Main branch pruning : The order of pruning the keel should start from the main branch, and prune off the broken leaves on the main branch. When pruning branches and leaves, be extra careful not to prune off the tender buds.

Pinching and topping : The keel itself can grow to a very high height, so it is necessary to pinch and topping during the growth period to control the height of the plant. Usually when it is 10 cm high, its top bud can be cut off, which can remove the apical dominance, promote the growth of side branches, and make it look more beautiful.

Pruning and shaping : The dragon bone should have some old, weak, sick and yellow branches pruned off to make the plant shape more coordinated and better looking. If not pruned, it will affect the overall appearance and consume nutrients, which is not good for the growth of the plant.

Keel pruning makes it grow faster

During the growth process of the keel, it is easy to sprout new branches after pruning and removing the top. It is generally better to do it when it grows to 20 cm to 30 cm high.

Notes on keel trimming

When trimming the keel, be sure to be careful not to let the flowing liquid get on your skin, as it may cause discomfort, so it is best to wear gloves when trimming.
