How to save onion seeds

Green onion seeds introduction

Onions have seeds. In the northern region, onion seeds usually mature in late May to early to mid-June. In the south, onion seeds are usually harvested in autumn, that is, in September and October. Onion seeds grow in the upper flower buds. As the onions grow, the seeds will become hard and black, and are not easy to crack when picked.

How to save onion seeds

The seeds of green onions are at the top of the green onions. When the green onions grow old, there will be an oval grape-shaped thing on the top, with many small grains inside. At this time, you can directly pick the onion buds and collect them together.

Green onion seeds are easy to collect. Just wait patiently until the green onions grow flower buds and then produce seeds. After a few more days, we can collect the green onion seeds. In addition, it is best to disinfect the green onion seeds before sowing, which can increase the germination rate.

Onion seed propagation

The seeds of green onion can be planted. After the harvest, the green onion seeds can be rubbed into grains after drying for 4-5 days, and then the impurities can be removed and the barren grains can be blown away by wind. The purified green onion seeds can be dried for another 3-4 days. Generally, the germination rate of green onion seeds harvested that year is above 90%, and the growth cycle is about 50 days.

How to plant green onion seeds

1. Seed treatment

Green onions are generally sown with dry seeds. Soaking and disinfecting the seeds before sowing can increase the germination rate and emergence rate. Soak and stir the seeds in clean water for 10 minutes, remove the unripe seeds and impurities, and then blanch the seeds in warm water at about 65° for 20-30 minutes and stir constantly. This can kill the bacteria on the surface of the seeds. The soaked seeds can be unearthed 1-2 days earlier.

2. Sowing method

There are two methods of sowing: broadcast sowing and row sowing. Broadcast sowing is to first dig up a layer of soil in the sowing bed and sieve it for covering soil. Generally, the sowing bed is filled with enough water, and after the bottom soil is applied, the seeds are sown evenly, and then the sieved soil is sprinkled on the seeds. Alternatively, the seeds can be sown first, and then covered with soil, compacted, and watered, which is called dry sowing.
