The growing environment and local conditions of watermelon

Watermelon growing environment and conditions

Watermelon prefers a warm, dry, sunny environment and is not cold-resistant. It is widely cultivated in the world's tropical to temperate zones. It is cultivated in various parts of China, and is most famous in Xinjiang, Lanzhou, Gansu, Dezhou, Shandong, Dongtai, Jiangsu and other places. Its original species may come from Africa.

Watermelon Growing Conditions

Watermelon prefers a continental climate with high temperature, plenty of sunshine and dry air. Sufficient light must be provided during the growth period, which is conducive to the accumulation of sugar and the improvement of the quality of the fruit. In addition, it is not resistant to low temperature environment, so warming measures need to be taken in winter, otherwise it will suffer from frost damage.

Watermelon growing temperature

Watermelon is not cold-resistant. The suitable growth temperature is between 24 and 30 degrees. The suitable growth temperature for the root system is 30-32 degrees. The minimum temperature for root hairs to occur is 14 degrees. In addition, it likes an environment with a large temperature difference between day and night, so that high-quality watermelons can be cultivated.

Watermelon growth process

The growth process of watermelon mainly includes the germination period, seedling period, vine growth period, fruiting period, fruit setting period, vigorous fruit growth period and pulp change period. Its growth rate is relatively fast, but sufficient water and fertilizer must be provided, and the maintenance environment also needs sufficient sunlight.

Watermelon planting time and method

Watermelon is usually sown and seedled in mid-to-late March. If the ambient temperature is above 20 degrees, the seeds are most likely to germinate. Choose loose and fertile soil in advance, apply enough base fertilizer, then sow the seeds, cover with soil, and water thoroughly to ensure soil moisture. After germination, select strong seedlings and transplant them to the field. Apply fertilizer once when the vines are in bloom to ensure flowering and fruiting.
