The growing environment and local conditions of osmanthus

Osmanthus fragrans growth environment and conditions

Osmanthus likes warmth and has strong adaptability to the environment. It is resistant to both high temperatures and cold weather. In areas south of the Qinling Mountains and the Huaihe River in China, no warming measures are needed in winter and it can overwinter outdoors.

Osmanthus was originally distributed in the southwestern region of China, and is also distributed in Cambodia, India, and Nepal. There are also wild varieties in southwestern China, Sichuan, southern Shaanxi, Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui, Henan and other places. It is now widely cultivated in the Huaihe River basin and the areas to its south.

Osmanthus growth conditions

Osmanthus likes sunlight but can also tolerate shade. If it is planted in an indoor potted plant in the north, it is especially important to provide sufficient light to facilitate growth and the formation of flower buds. Osmanthus likes moisture and has a certain degree of drought resistance. Waterlogging is a must. It is not very demanding on the soil, but is suitable for planting in loam with deep soil, good drainage, looseness, fertility, and slight acidity.

Osmanthus growth temperature

Osmanthus likes a warm and humid environment. The average temperature in the planting area is 14-28 degrees, the average temperature in July is 24-28 degrees, and the average temperature in January is above 0 degrees. It can withstand the lowest temperature of minus 13 degrees. The most suitable growth temperature is 15-28 degrees.

The growth process of osmanthus

1. Seedling stage

At this time, the osmanthus is still very small and very weak in the seedling stage. At this time, you need to water and fertilize the plants appropriately. Usually, you can fertilize osmanthus with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Before each fertilization, it is best to dilute the fertilizer with water to reduce the concentration of the fertilizer. Osmanthus likes water but is afraid of waterlogging. At this time, don't water too much, just keep the soil slightly moist.

2. Flower bud differentiation period

After four to five years of growth, osmanthus will enter the flower bud differentiation period. At this time, the plant will grow small flower buds and then bear fruit. Osmanthus has a higher demand for fertilizer at this time. It is best to fertilize the plant once every half a month during this stage.

Osmanthus grows very fast during the flower bud differentiation period. At this time, it is necessary to properly prune the branches of the plant, mainly to prune off the overgrown branches. After pruning, you can apply potassium permanganate to the wound for disinfection to accelerate wound healing. After the wound of the plant heals, water it appropriately. When planting later, let the plant receive sufficient light and provide shade in time.
