The growing environment and conditions of the pepper tree

Sichuan pepper trees are generally distributed from plains to high-altitude mountains. In Qinghai, slopes at an altitude of 2,500 meters are common. They are produced in most parts of the country. They are planted in the southern part of Northeast China, the northern slope of the Wuling Mountains, the coastal areas of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and the southeastern Tibet.

Pepper tree growth environment

The Chinese prickly ash tree prefers a warm, humid and sunny environment. It is cold-resistant, drought-resistant and pruning-resistant, but not waterlogged. Short-term accumulation of water will cause the death of the plant. It is suitable for planting in loam and sandy loam with deep, fertile soil and good drainage.

Pepper tree growth temperature

Sichuan pepper prefers warmth and is not cold-resistant. It is suitable for planting in areas with a temperature of 10-15 degrees. Although it can be cultivated in areas with an average annual temperature below 10 degrees, the plants are easily frostbitten. During the dormant period, young branches of Sichuan pepper can withstand temperatures as low as minus 18 degrees, and large trees can withstand temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees. Therefore, when the extreme temperature in winter is below minus 18 degrees or minus 20 degrees, it is likely to suffer frostbite.

The growth process of pepper tree

1. Root system. The root system of Zanthoxylum bungeanum has three growth peaks a year: the first growth peak is from mid-March to early April, the second growth peak is from early May to mid-June, with large growth and long duration, which is the period of the most root growth throughout the year. The third growth peak is from late September to late October after the fruit is harvested. At this time, the soil temperature gradually decreases and the growth of new roots is small.

2. Branch buds. The medium and long nutrient branches of Zanthoxylum bungeanum have two growth peaks a year: the first growth peak occurs from April to May, the second growth peak occurs from June to August, and the growth stops in early September. The short branches have only one growth peak a year, and the growth period is short, starting in early April and ending in early May.

3. Flower bud differentiation and fruit growth. The concentrated period of flower bud differentiation of Zanthoxylum bungeanum is between the two growth peaks of branches, which is about mid-June in the north. The growth and development process of Zanthoxylum bungeanum fruit can be divided into four periods: rapid growth period, slow growth period, coloring period and maturity period.

Planting time and method of pepper tree

Sichuan pepper trees are suitable for planting in spring and autumn. The planting time varies in different regions. Autumn planting can be carried out in places with relatively warm temperatures. Spring planting is generally done before the buds sprout for survival. Planting in March in the north will affect germination too early and affect later growth too late.

The Sichuan pepper tree is small and has strong adaptability to soil. It can generally be planted in the open space in front of or behind the house. The planting density should be controlled well. Dig holes with a row spacing of 2.2 meters and a plant spacing of 1.5 meters. You can apply some basal fertilizer. Water and fertilize in time during the growth period. When the Sichuan pepper fruit turns completely bright red, the skin has a small crack, and it has a fragrance, it can be harvested.
