Cauliflower's growing environment and local conditions

Cauliflower's growing environment and conditions

Cauliflower prefers a cool environment and is a semi-hardy vegetable. It was originally distributed on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean and was introduced to my country in the mid-19th century. It is one of the main vegetable varieties grown in Fujian, Zhejiang, and Taiwan.

Cauliflower growing conditions

Cauliflower likes an environment with plenty of sunlight and has strict requirements on water. It likes moisture but is not tolerant to waterlogging or drought. It is not very demanding on soil, but sandy loam with high organic matter and deep soil layer is the best. The suitable soil pH is 5.5-6.6.

Cauliflower growing temperature

Cauliflower has a well-developed root system and is not cold-resistant. It is susceptible to frost damage if the temperature is below 0 degrees. It is difficult to form flower heads at temperatures above 25 degrees. Leaf growth and bolting and flowering need to take place in a warm environment, with a suitable temperature of 20-25 degrees. Flower head formation requires a low-temperature vernalization stage.

The growth process of cauliflower

1. Seed germination period: After the cauliflower is planted, the seeds begin to germinate and then the true leaves will appear. Under suitable temperature and soil moisture conditions, it takes about 4-5 days.

2. Leaf growth period: After the true leaves of cauliflower appear, the leaves begin to grow vigorously, generally forming 8-10 leaves, which takes about 20-30 days.

3. The formation period of vegetable stalks: The formation period of vegetable stalks is from the appearance of cauliflower buds to the harvest of the main stalks. When the temperature is between 20-25 degrees, the vegetable stalks can grow into vegetable stalks in half a month, but the quality is poor. When the temperature is between 10-15 degrees, the vegetable stalks develop slowly, and it takes about 20-30 days, but better quality vegetable stalks can be formed.

4. Flowering and fruiting period: The flowering and fruiting period is from the initial flowering of cauliflower to the maturity and harvesting of seeds, which generally takes about 50-60 days.

Cauliflower planting time and method

There are many varieties of cauliflower, which can be planted all year round. The very early and early varieties are resistant to high temperatures and are suitable for planting in the summer from June to September. The medium and late varieties are cold-resistant and suitable for planting in the spring and winter from November to February of the following year.

Cauliflower seeds do not need to be germinated and can be sown, but their seeds are small, so it is best to sow them evenly. They also need to be covered with a layer of organic soil and sprayed with water. They will germinate in about 3-4 days.
