When is the best season to plant Pueraria root?

Kudzu root planting season and time

Pueraria root is generally an annual crop, and the planting time is not seasonal. Most Pueraria root is planted in early spring, which is the period from the Spring Equinox to the Qingming Festival. However, in the areas north of the Yangtze River, due to the relatively cold climate, the planting time can be postponed by about 15-30 days.

There are generally only three types of Pueraria lobata, namely bitter Pueraria lobata, pink Pueraria lobata and Xiang Ge No. 1. Among them, Xiang Ge No. 1 is a hybrid variety with affordable prices. There is no difference in the seed time of different varieties of Pueraria lobata.

Kudzu harvest season

Most of the kudzu roots mature and are available on the market between December and February of the following year. This period is also the best time to harvest kudzu roots. The average yield per mu is about 5,000 to 8,000 catties, and the price of wild kudzu roots is around 20 to 50 yuan per catty.

Steps and methods of planting kudzu root

1. Site selection and land preparation

To grow kudzu root, you need to choose soil with deep soil layer and good drainage. Start land preparation in February and apply about 1,500 kilograms of organic fertilizer per acre.

2. Sowing and seedling raising

The time for sowing and seedling raising is around the Qingming Festival. Before sowing, the seeds should be soaked in warm water to stimulate the growth of the seeds. Then, the seeds should be sown in holes, with 3-4 seeds sown in each hole.

3. Transplanting and planting

The time for transplanting is usually early March. The soil should be kept moist. Place 500-700 seedlings per acre and then cover and compact the soil.
