Phalaenopsis care and watering

Phalaenopsis, this elegant and delicate plant, is often jokingly called "disposable flower" by some flower lovers because they seem to have difficulty surviving the summer after blooming once after the Spring Festival. But in fact, as long as you master the correct maintenance methods, especially watering techniques, Phalaenopsis can not only avoid root rot and dryness, but also bloom beautifully year after year. Let’s learn about the care and watering of Phalaenopsis.

1. Phalaenopsis maintenance

1. Selection of planting materials

The planting material for Phalaenopsis is usually a mixture of moss, bark, charcoal, pebbles, Akadama soil and slow-release fertilizer . These materials need to have good drainage and water retention. When caring for plants at home, you can choose to buy ready-made planting materials, which are not only reasonably priced but can also be used many times. Since the planting material will rot over time, it is recommended to replace it every 1 to 2 years.

2. The lighting should be appropriate

Phalaenopsis orchids should not be placed in direct sunlight, they prefer bright diffuse light. Avoid direct sunlight in summer to prevent leaves from being burned. A bright living room or other area indoors is an ideal place to place it.

3. Good ventilation

Ventilation is essential when growing Phalaenopsis orchids indoors. Windows should be opened frequently to increase air circulation and avoid a stuffy environment. Especially after watering, good ventilation helps the excess water in the planting material to evaporate quickly and reduce the possibility of water accumulation.

4. Control the temperature

As a subtropical plant, Phalaenopsis can withstand certain high temperatures but is not cold-resistant. It is relatively easy to maintain suitable growing temperatures in the north, while the south requires more attention. The suitable temperature range for Phalaenopsis growth is 20℃ to 28℃. If the ambient temperature is lower than 15℃ in winter, it may affect the health of Phalaenopsis.

5. Fertilize reasonably

During the first few months of a newly repotted Phalaenopsis, the nutrients in the planting material are sufficient and no additional fertilizer is needed. If the pot is not changed, apply all-effect compound fertilizer or organic fertilizer once every 10 days or so. As growth slows, fertilization frequency can be reduced. Before flowering, stop applying nitrogen fertilizer and use potassium dihydrogen phosphate instead to promote the quality and quantity of flowers. Irrigate the roots with potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution once every 10 days, for about 3 times in a row.

2. Watering of Phalaenopsis

1. The particularity of Phalaenopsis root system

Phalaenopsis has typical aerial roots, which can not only carry out photosynthesis but also participate in respiration. Therefore, they cannot be buried deep in the soil, otherwise it will easily cause the roots to become suffocated and rot. When caring for Phalaenopsis, it is recommended to use loose and breathable planting materials such as sphagnum moss and pine bark , and leave part of the roots exposed to the air.

2. Timing of watering

Determine the right time to water: Touch the planting material. When it feels like it is about to dry out, that is the signal to water. Avoid waiting until the planting medium is completely dry, as this will cause the Phalaenopsis to lack water, leading to yellowing leaves and shriveled roots.

Seasonal differences: Spring is a period of vigorous growth and watering is required, but this should be done at noon or in the afternoon when the temperature is higher. When the summer temperatures are high, choose to water in the evening. In late autumn and winter, water at noon and reduce the frequency of watering.

3. Watering method

Avoid heavy watering: Due to the looseness of Phalaenopsis planting material, it is not suitable to use large amounts of water directly for irrigation, so as to prevent moisture from overflowing from the bottom of the flowerpot while the planting material is still partially dry.

Watering in batches: Use a small stream of water to slowly water the plant in 2-3 times until the water completely penetrates the planting material and water seeps out from the bottom of the pot. The immersion pot method is also an effective way of watering, which can ensure that the planting material fully absorbs water.

Water quality selection: Avoid using tap water containing chlorine and alkalinity, as this may be detrimental to the growth of Phalaenopsis. It is recommended to use purified water or water used to raise fish at home.

Moisturize exposed roots: While watering, you should also spray the exposed roots to maintain a high humidity environment and prevent root aging and shriveling.

By using the above methods, you can ensure the healthy growth of Phalaenopsis and avoid common maintenance problems. If you master the correct watering techniques, your Phalaenopsis will bloom every year and become a beautiful landscape in your home.
