How to propagate grapevines and what to pay attention to

Grapevine propagation method

The main ways of grapevine propagation are cutting propagation, grafting propagation, layering propagation and tissue culture. Its seeds can be propagated, and its natural reproduction method is seed propagation. Generally speaking, grapevines are propagated fastest by cuttings.

Grapevine breeding time

If grape vines are propagated by cuttings, it is generally more appropriate to choose June to August every summer. At this time, the plants grow vigorously, and the cuttings can take root as soon as possible after cutting, with a high survival rate.

Grapevine propagation method

Grapevine cutting propagation

Cut the woody new shoots as cuttings. The length of the cuttings should be about 30 cm. Note that the upper end should be cut flat and the lower end should be cut obliquely. Cut off the upper leaves and leave only one. Dry them in the sun for a few days and insert them into the soil after the wound is dry. Be careful not to insert all of them. The part with leaves on the top should be exposed and the soil should be compacted.

Grapevine propagation by seed

Grape vines are generally propagated by planting grape seedlings. If seeds are used for sowing, they are difficult to survive, so sowing is generally not used for propagation.

Notes on grapevine propagation

Before propagating grape vines by cuttings, you need to make ridges, preferably flat ridges about one meter wide. The ridge soil must be loose and well-drained. 50% sand can be mixed in, which will better meet drainage requirements and facilitate rooting.
