When and how to change the soil of geranium

Time to change the soil for geraniums

Geraniums grow very fast and need to have their soil changed once a year, but this cannot be done during the flowering period. Therefore, the soil cannot be changed from early spring to June. The best time to change pots is from late August to early September.

Geranium repotting and soil changing method

Geraniums should be pruned before changing the soil, removing dense branches, thin branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, and long branches, retaining 3 to 5 strong main branches, and then shortening the main branches and side branches. Each side branch only needs 3-4 side buds, so that the branches of the whole plant are evenly distributed and compact, and the plant shape is plump and short.

After removing the geranium from the pot, it can be planted directly in loose, fertile soil. Bone meal can be used as base fertilizer. Water it 2 days after planting. During the growth and flowering period, apply thin liquid fertilizer once every 7 days. Control watering and stop fertilizing from July to August. Watering should also be controlled on weekdays, and watering can only be done when the soil turns white.

Things to note when changing the soil for geraniums

1. Geraniums should not be exposed to the sun immediately after being repotted. They need to be kept in a semi-shaded environment. After they adapt to the new environment, the lighting time can be increased. Do not water them immediately after changing the soil. Wait two days before watering them. It is better to keep the soil dry than wet.

2. Geraniums like fertile, loose and well-breathable soil. It can be mixed with humus, garden soil or peat soil, river sand or perlite, and organic fertilizer. It can also be mixed with fine sand, humus, perlite and organic fertilizer.

Geranium maintenance method after soil change

After changing the soil of geranium, the soil in the pot should be kept moist, but not too much watering, especially in the rainy season, attention should be paid to drainage, and the soil should be kept slightly dry in winter. It likes a sunny environment, and it should be cultivated away from the scorching sun. It needs 60% to 70% shading. The flowering period is from June to July. Fertilizer and water should be sufficient, and fertilizer should be applied once every half a month.

See the sun after changing the soil

After changing the soil, the geranium needs to be kept in a semi-shaded environment and wait for it to adapt to the pot. It can be placed in the sun after about a month, but be careful to avoid exposure to the sun.

Watering after soil replacement

Geraniums can be watered promptly after changing the soil, but water should not accumulate to prevent the roots from being soaked in water for a long time, which may cause rot.

Leaves turn yellow after changing soil

It may be normal for geranium leaves to turn yellow after changing the soil. At this time, it has not yet adapted to the new environment. It will slowly recover with proper maintenance. It may also be that the soil is not suitable. If the soil used is too sticky, it will hinder the root breathing and the leaves will turn yellow easily. In addition, excessive watering will also cause yellowing of the leaves, so the watering method needs to be changed.
