How to propagate hibiscus and what to pay attention to

Hibiscus reproduction method

The main ways of propagating hibiscus are cuttings, division, sowing and layering, but cuttings and division are the most commonly used.

Seed propagation is the most primitive method of propagation. It is relatively easy to obtain hibiscus seeds. After a seed germinates, it can grow into a hibiscus plant. Seed propagation can produce large quantities of hibiscus.

How to propagate hibiscus fastest

Using water as a substrate to propagate green plants is the most effective method, and rooting is also the fastest. Any plant absorbs water all the time. It can grow without soil, but water is indispensable. Rooting in water cuttings is at least 10 days faster than in soil cuttings.

Hibiscus breeding time

Cuttings are a commonly used propagation method for hibiscus. Generally, the best time for hibiscus cuttings is in spring, specifically from March to April. This can be combined with pruning and shaping, as this is also the season with the highest survival rate of cuttings. However, it can be done throughout the year as long as the temperature is suitable.

Hibiscus division propagation

Hibiscus division propagation should be chosen after the leaves fall in autumn, or before sprouting in spring. Prune off the old roots at the bottom of the plant, separate the small plants, prepare suitable potting soil, and plant the small plants separately. After completion, do not place them directly in the sun, which will seriously hinder their normal growth.

Hibiscus cutting propagation

Cuttings are the most commonly used method for propagating hibiscus. Before sprouting in spring, cut sturdy annual or biennial branches as cuttings. The length should be controlled at about 20-30 cm. After soaking in clean water for a few hours, insert them into the soil two-thirds of the way, with a spacing of 8-10 cm. Pour a certain amount of water on them and avoid direct sunlight. They will take root in 30 days.

Hibiscus seed propagation

Harvest hibiscus seeds in November and store them in a low-temperature and dry place. They can be used in April of the following spring. Select the well-developed seeds and sow them evenly in the soil.

Hibiscus propagation precautions

The location for sowing hibiscus must have sufficient sunlight, because hibiscus is a positive flower and needs sufficient sunlight in the later stage. It is not suitable for shady places. When sowing on the ground, the soil must be prepared in advance. First, deep plow the sowing ground, and then break up large clods of soil to make the land level and the soil particles uniform.
