How to propagate camellia and what to pay attention to

Camellia propagation method

The main way to propagate camellia is by cuttings and grafting. It can also be propagated by seeds. Collect the seeds in autumn, place them in a well-ventilated place to dry, and then take out the seeds after the fruit cracks naturally.

Camellia is propagated fastest by cuttings. One branch can be used to propagate several pots, and it is easy to propagate multiple pots. But you must remember that the temperature for camellia cuttings needs to be between 20-30 degrees. The survival rate of the cuttings will be very high, and the rooting speed will be very fast.

Camellia breeding time

Camellias are mostly propagated by cuttings, which can be done in May in spring or September in autumn, and have a high survival rate.

Camellia propagation method

Camellia division propagation

First, you need to choose a suitable rootstock. Between Qingming Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival, plant the rootstock in a flowerpot. Use sterilized scissors to cut off about half of the desired joint. The cut should be smooth, and then fit tightly. Wrap it with plastic film and water it twice a day. It will heal after 2 months and can then be cut and planted. In February of the following year, use a knife to cut off the tail of the rootstock for transplanting.

Camellia cutting propagation

The time for camellia cuttings is from May to June and from September to October. The cuttings should be strong, semi-lignified branches with a length of 8-10 cm, and the lower leaves should be cut off to reduce water consumption. The substrate can be pure sand. After preparation, poke a hole in the soil surface, put the cuttings in, compact the soil, and water it thoroughly. It will take more than a month for the roots to take root.

Camellia seed propagation

Before sowing camellia, choose soil with high permeability. You can add a little fine sand, crush the soil, and then mix it. Soak the seeds for about 2 hours. If they are fresh seeds, you can plant them directly, cover them with 3 cm of soil, and water them thoroughly. They will germinate in about 30 days.

Camellia leaf cuttings

Camellia is usually propagated by branch cuttings, but leaf cuttings can also be used. Use mountain mud as the substrate, add some river sand to facilitate drainage, trim annual leaves as leaf cutting material, insert them into the soil about 2 cm deep, compact the soil, water it enough, and then place it in a cool and ventilated place. It will take root in 3 months.

Camellia breeding precautions

The best maintenance temperature for camellia is between 25-30 degrees. After about a month, when new roots grow at the base of the cuttings, you can increase the light exposure time. When the plant is 50-80 cm tall, you can move it to a pot for planting. Spray water and provide shade in time.
