How to propagate roses and what to pay attention to

Rose breeding method

The main ways of rose propagation are cuttings, bud grafting, water grafting and sowing. Rose seeds can be propagated, and the natural reproduction method is sowing. Rose cuttings are the fastest way to propagate.

Rose breeding time

If the temperature is suitable for rose maintenance, cuttings can be taken all year round, but autumn is best. It is easier to manage after winter and can bloom in the following spring after being potted.

Rose breeding method

Rose division propagation

Roses are generally propagated by division in early spring or late autumn. The plants need to be dug out and divided with the soil to ensure that each plant has at least two roots. The plants can then be transplanted into loose soil along with the soil. The biggest advantage of division propagation is that there is a high probability of flowering in the same year.

Rose cutting propagation

The common method for rose propagation is cuttings, which is usually carried out in early spring or late autumn. Cut strong and mature branches with a length of about 10 cm. Keep 3 to 4 buds in each section, keep the substrate moist, and shade it when necessary. The cuttings will take root 30 days after propagation.

Rose seed propagation

Roses can be sown in spring. The seeds should be soaked in water for a day and a night in advance to prepare for germination. They will sprout in April and can be transplanted in the autumn of the same year or the spring of the following year. However, the germination rate of sowing is very low.

Hydroponic rose propagation

Roses are generally grown hydroponically in summer and autumn. Cut the flowering branches to a length of 10 cm, retain 3 or 4 bud nodes on each section, cut the bottom into a bevel, and then insert them into the prepared water bottle. Choose a brown bottle, or wrap a transparent glass cup with black plastic film. Be careful not to expose it to the sun. If the temperature is high, change the water once a week.

Notes on Rose Breeding

When the new shoots of roses grow to 15-20 cm, you can pinch them to make the side buds germinate. When the side branches grow to a certain length, continue to pinch them. Water and fertilize them in time during the growth period, and take drainage measures in the rainy season. It is very cold-resistant and can withstand temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius, but it is best to keep warm in winter.
