How to propagate Desert Rose

The main ways of propagating Desert Rose are cutting propagation, layering propagation, grafting propagation, and sowing propagation. Desert Rose seeds can be propagated, and the natural reproduction method is sowing propagation. Cutting propagation of Desert Rose is the fastest.

Desert rose breeding time

Desert rose is resistant to high temperatures. It is most suitable for cuttings when the temperature is 20-35 degrees. The survival rate is high and the rooting speed is faster. Therefore, it is recommended to breed in spring or summer.

Desert Rose Propagation Method

Desert Rose Cutting Propagation

Desert rose is usually propagated by cuttings in spring and summer. You need to choose 1 to 2 year old branches, preferably the top branches. Cut them into many sections, each about 10 cm, and then put them in a cool place to dry. Use clean river sand as the substrate and insert the branches into it. During the cutting period, just keep the substrate slightly moist and properly block the sunlight. It usually takes 20-30 days to take root.

Desert Rose Seed Propagation

Desert rose is difficult to bear fruit and needs artificial pollination to help it bear fruit. When its fruit is ripe, it will naturally crack and needs to be harvested before the fruit cracks. After the seeds are collected, they should be planted as soon as possible. If they need to be stored, they should be kept in a cool place as much as possible.

Hydroponic Desert Rose Propagation

1. Time for cuttings: Desert Rose can activate its powerful life force when it stays in a maintenance environment of 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. To reach this temperature, it can only be propagated by cuttings in the hot summer, which can bring about a strong regeneration ability. In other words, it will take root and sprout faster.

2. Selected branches: Desert rose naturally prefers a relatively dry growing environment. When selecting branches for cutting propagation, you need to consider the moisture resistance of the branches. According to personal cutting experience, choosing more mature branches for cuttings can bring better regeneration ability. It is recommended to cut the top branches that have grown for about two years, and the length should be controlled at about 10 cm.

3. Hydroponics: The pruned branches cannot be directly planted in water, because the desert rose is a succulent plant with branches full of juice. It is necessary to wait until the cut is dry before inserting it into water to take root and reproduce. If it is directly inserted into the water, it is easy to be infected by various bacteria, resulting in rot.

Precautions for breeding of desert rose

Desert rose is suitable for planting in sandy soil with good air permeability. It is relatively drought-resistant and does not need to be watered too frequently. It can be watered every 3 days in summer and once a week in winter. A thin layer of fertilizer can be applied once a month. It likes to grow in an environment with high temperature and sufficient light. Some warming measures should be taken in winter.
