Cactus growth environment conditions and characteristics

Cactus growth environment conditions and requirements

In my country, cactus was introduced in the late Ming Dynasty and is commonly cultivated in the southern coastal areas. It grows wild in Guangdong, southern Guangxi and the coastal areas of Hainan. Cactus likes sunlight, warmth and is drought-resistant, but is afraid of cold, waterlogging and acidic soil.

Cactus growth temperature

The suitable temperature for cactus growth is generally 20-30℃, and not lower than 5℃ in winter. The room temperature should be kept above 20℃ during the day, and not lower than 5℃ at night. Too low temperature can easily cause root rot. The temperature can be safely overwintered at above 6 degrees.

Cactus growth humidity

The suitable humidity for cactus growth is 30%. As for watering, you can water less in spring, more in flowering period, and water once every 2-3 days in summer. Follow the principle of "better dry than wet". In autumn, loosen the soil in time after watering.

Cactus growing soil

Cactus likes fertile, well-drained sandy loam. For potted plants, you can use 3 parts of leaf mold, garden soil and coarse sand, add ash or crushed eggshells to mix into culture soil, or use special culture soil sold on the market.

Cactus growth cycle and process

Cactus in the greenhouse usually blooms from April to June, with May being the peak flowering period. Most cacti grow for 3 to 4 years, and they bloom every year when the bulbs reach more than 3 to 4 centimeters.

The growth process of cactus is mainly divided into two stages. The young cactus is emerald green in color, and the thorns are very dense and mostly white in color. The mature bulb is larger and the thorns are more scattered. It usually blooms at the top and bears fruit on the thorns.
